Teenager and other things
2026, July 10
I want to leave a reflection here since I removed my blog and didn't make a proper music page in which I could do this.
In the 2000s, a lot of strange things happened that nowadays would never be tolerated. The people who committed those acts would be completely torn apart. And rightly so. However, I'm not condemning the past, just looking back with a mature perplexity.
I remember when KLB appeared in the 2000s and the single Every Ten Words [1] stuck in my head to the point that I pestered my parents to buy the CD so I could listen to that song repeatedly. Back then there was no Spotify, no internet.
I, at around 11–12 years old, loved this song and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it. As an adult, I decided to listen to it again and pay attention to the lyrics. And lo and behold, we can say that we, Brazilians, have a stalker song that can compete toe-to-toe with Every Breath You Take by The Police.
Here is the wonderful lyrics that would never happen nowadays:
It's been so long
That I've been following you
I know step by step
Every one of your paths
I know the time you wake up
And the time you go to sleep
I know everything about you
And you know nothing about me
I managed to get
Your phone number
And I called you but I didn't want to
Say my name
I was afraid and when I heard your voice
I hung up right away
And I confess,
I lacked the courage to say
Out of every ten words I say
Eleven is you
Every face I look at
In all of them I see you
And for those who hate Pagode, That So-Called Freedom [2] by Só Pra Contrariar is actually quite poetic. No irony intended. (the beauty of the lyrics will probably be lost on translation, but anyway...)
What am I gonna do with that so-called freedom
If I'm lonely thinking about you
I never imagined missing you so much
My heart doesn't know how to forget you
I went astray, I made a mistake
I traded the one I loved for an illusion
But we learn, life is a school
That's not how a great love story ends
I wanna hug you, I wanna kiss you
I desire you day and night
I want to tie me up to you
You are everything I ever wanted
What am I gonna do with this evening
Everywhere I look I remember you
I don't know if I stay or move to another city
Honestly, honey, I don't know what to do
I went astray, I made a mistake
I thought it would be better to sing another song
But we learn, life is a school
I trade freedom for your forgiveness
Unfortunately, we don't have the atrocities of the past anymore, but we also don't have the poetry of the past anymore. One thing improves, another gets worse.
